Fanart is ART-stamp by ILoveKnucklesShadow Fanart is ART-stamp by ILoveKnucklesShadow
I have seen so many people making those disturbing and sad comments about fanart..
"Why can't you do something original?"
"Why is there SO much fanart?? D:" etc etc.
If you can't understand that putting time, effort and just pure love in a picture with the characters that you like from an official anime, game, cartoon, book etc. then you have rocks in your head..
So yeah have a crappy stamp.. I just had to make one about this :3

Yep. If you take someone's OC and draw it, it's fanart?

Fan art IS art. Hey hey hey, fanART, it's in the name, huh! Also, it permits to express yourself, what do you think about it?

Ever seen a stamp here stating that "Everything Is Fanart"? The person has quite an interesting description.=D

Who has the audacity to call fanart "crappy" or "unoriginal" I love the FanArt section of DA and FanArt it shows the original creators you care:aww: I'd Be flattered if someone tried to draw a character of mine:)
Some people just don't understand:(
But, BUT! There are some people that are idiots when it comes to Fanart:|
Like as in people who try and do everything like the book says, or like replications, just do it the way you feel is best:)
So, I'm just throwing my opinion out there in the cold, harsh internet.
Thanks for reading:)
PetalRain Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I completely agree. Fanart is still original, if you did it in your own style. Also, there is creativity involved with it, like maybe drawing the characters doing something "non-canon" or anything like that.

However, there still are cases when fanart is not original, such as replication - especially not drawing it in your own style.

FanArt is art technically.

Drawing fanart does help you improve:
-it's drawing, hence it's practice in itself.
-drawing in different art styles can help you expeirience more and more and give you ideas for your own artstyle.
- if someone's REALLY mastered a certain artstyle, it can be really really cool.

I will SLAP anyone who contradicts this stamp, i actually work hard on my fan art and am proud of it.
oakstar123 Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2010
That is so true! You know, it's actually harder to do fanart then original art! Because you have to try and get everything right, but with OC's, you can change 'em how ever you want
NinjaDragon3 Featured By Owner Nov 28, 2009  Student Digital Artist
It's ART!!!!! it doesnt have to be original to be art. There are plenty of artist who work for other people and create pieces with other people's characters. Great stamp!:D

Nice animation on the text

I admit I have'nt got any of those kind of comments, and most of my gallery is fan art, but as I read another comment below, their right with the fact "It can help you with origional creations"
I came up with some dragon characters, a few mini storys of my own

This isn't gramatically correct. I don't understand why someone would use a stamp that doesn't even make sense.

It should be "too, you know" or "to you know" ( I doubt you mean that one ).

Yes. I love this stamp. GONNA USE IT.

I once got a SRS comment about how "I'm polluting the art world with my unoriginality and have no right to call myself an artist" because I draw fanart and fan ocs. People like that need to get over themselves.
Fanart can be creative, original, and wonderful. I actually watch several PROFESSIONAL artists on here who were signed by comic book companies and are now commissioned professionally because of their fanart. Also lots of big artists on here who are known for their original stuff started out and got big BECAUSE of their fanart.
I've seen plenty of creative and original pieces of fanart and plenty of original fan ocs. Sure, there are mary-sues out there and rip-off artists, but people shouldn't let them ruin it for the rest of us.

:happycry: Thanks for making this stamp :highfive:
People are quick to say that fanart isn't art because:

1)You can't make money off of it
My answer: I have my DA account to have fun and improve my art/storytelling though comics and animations. Not to make money

2) You can't improve from doing it
My answer: I'm gotten better and coloring, outfit designs and writing personalities for my fancharacters... How is that not improving?

3)You can't get a real art job only doing fanart
My answer: That's true, but I've been an illustrator for almost a year. People should draw in their own style as well for their portfolio but what you post on DA should be your own business.

Either way, fanart is art. No matter what stupid excuse people try to come up with ^_~

So friggin' true. D:

I simply HATE how people keep saying that fan artists can't become professionals.. it's an art form too! >.>

I love drawing in general, and I love drawing about everything.. I just can't help it if I have an obsession to draw fan art a lot. 8D I'll just try to create them in genius poses or other way somewhat different from the usual "just standing there"-fanart.

And yes, I do plan having a future career that has something to do with drawing. Creating fan art makes you get familiar with different characters, and it might actually help you to create original art too, since you get more experience and find the key what makes a good character. :3

We love art, we have our own views of expressing it.. I don't see this huge uproar that everyone makes about fan art. >.> I love this stamp. <3
Kuki333 Featured By Owner Jul 13, 2009  Student General Artist
I completely agree with you. Fanart is art too, of course. We always draw them trying to give a "tribute" to those series or characters we like a lot. The problem starts when you don't make an effort to do a properly honor to it.

I used to do a lot of fanart, and though I've moved on and done a lot more original work, it's surprising that I got more faves on the fan stuff then on my own work, so if anything, it's better XD
Cock-Roach92 Featured By Owner Nov 8, 2008
EVERYTHING is doesn't matter what you do...somehow art is involved...but it takes more creativity for an original piece...and in some absurd way even original work is fanart as well...nothing is really original the more i think about it...oh well...
LupinLuva Featured By Owner Nov 8, 2008
While I think it is important to draw original things, fanart is fine. :/
My art teachers even agree fanart is a good way to get people into art in the first place.
But, I have a bit more... respect? idk what to call it... for a person who draws at least some original characters or idea or whatnot, and not all fanart. :/

RipfangDragon Featured By Owner Nov 8, 2008  Professional General Artist
It is...but you can't do anything with it.
Fanart = non profitable and you cannot make a career out of it.
It's there purely for the artist's enjoyment (and sometimes the fan-base that goes with it). It goes hand in hand with fanfiction.

My personal opinion: Fanart is okay, however, if that's all someone draws...then they're pretty bad at being creative and making their own characters and stories.

That does not mean stop drawing it, to all fan-artists who are reading this. It's a personal choice...LIKE SMOKING! :D
YoruNoTora Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2008
Yeah, unless someone actually manages (in an almost impossible scenario) to sign a contract with the publishing company/manga-ka/character designer/whatever :D

Personally, I wouldn't compare drawing fanart with smoking x3

Also, if someone enjoys drawing just fanart, it doesn't mean they're uncreative ;D They might have another hobby by which they express their creativity. And, I've even seen ~some~ (though unfortunately, not too much) creative fanart. Some people like to alter "official" characters' designs in their fanarts and maybe even draw them in an "original" setting. ^^

Drawing common fanart isn't very original though. Also drawing it for pageviews is lame. ><
But if someone enjoys drawing/looking at it, that's fine. :)

"Fanart is okay, however, if that's all someone draws...then they're pretty bad at being creative and making their own characters and stories."
well, not everybody ~wants~ to become a novelists/storywriters/character designers/manga-ka. Some people want to draw fanart only, and I think some of them don't even feel like making original characters and stories. :]

But I don't mean to sound hostile or anything, I'm just saying what I think about this. ^^

Lastly, I say I support both original art and fanart. <3
RipfangDragon Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2008  Professional General Artist
It's very much like smoking if you find the proper rabid fangirl who's obsessed to the point where it's bad for her health =P

AU Fanarts are better than most, I have to agree. However, what really crawls up my booty is fan-characters and mary-sues (I don't think I have to explain why) and the fantards (ditto).

Bah, you're not hostile at all. Opinions are opinions, and I expect and encourage you to defend yours (which is I posted to begin with. I wish more people were so prepared to defend their opinions, honestly).

Some fanart, in small doses, is fine. I do support fanart (to a degree, it's not bad). So, overall, I do support both :ahoy:
YoruNoTora Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2008
Ah I agree ;P

Mary Sues, ewww <__< It should be Mary S-eww, lol. And yeah, most (not all, I think) fan characters are uninteresting, boring and/or annoying who belong to that horrible species called Mary Sues/Gary Stus. I've seen a few pretty good or decent fan characters though. :] They're okay, if they're well developed.

I'm always ready to defend my opinions. :) If someone ever were to flame me, I wouldn't flame them back, but say "It's my opinion, deal with it" ;D

Fanart IS art, and it can be just as wonderful as original art. Although I must admit, I tend to prefer original art simply because while you CAN put your heart and soul into some wonderful fanart, its something completely different and on a higher level when you create something completely and truly original. I don't think everyone hates fanart, I jsut think people tend to prefer original art because its not just the pose and techniques that are original, but the character as well. I can't speak for everyone though. :p
